Gender Announcement

We were so anxious to learn the gender of our little one on the way. Baby was really squirmy throughout the ultrasound, so the technician had a hard time being able to see the gender. Luckily, success!

We are thrilled to announce that:

I wasn't feeling a strong intuition from the get-go with this pregnancy like I did with Makenna, when I felt nearly certain she was a girl. My first initial thought was "boy," but at times I really also felt it was a girl. It wasn't until around sixteen weeks when I started feeling our baby move daily, and then steadily grow stronger and more active with each passing day, that I started to feel certain. Matt was even able to feel our baby kick at just under twenty weeks, so by that point I was truly expecting the gender to be "boy!"

We haven't settled on a name just yet, but once we do, we'll keep it a secret until he's born. And if you can believe it, I have just turned twenty four weeks along, so it's only a few more months until we get to meet our little guy!

We had fun sharing the gender news with my family over FaceTime and sharing the news in-person with Matt's family over Thanksgiving. I baked cupcakes with a gender-specific filling, so it was a funny and very messy moment for everyone to find out!

Praise the Lord, we learned our baby boy's anatomy looks "perfect" according to the recent ultrasound. They did, however, discover that I have a low placenta. The doctor fully expects for the placenta to move as my uterus grows, as is normally the case in this scenario. But until it does move, they will watch my placenta via ultrasound at my next appointments. {Therefore, bonus peeks at our little man!} I am really hoping and praying to be able to do a vaginal delivery with our son, so I would greatly appreciate your prayers that my placenta will move soon and no longer be of any concern. Thank you!

A Lot Going On

This is the end of my second week back to work with my wonderful part-time, work from home job. And these last two weeks have been crazy, to say the least.

But first, let me back up to update a little more on Project P.R.B. If you remember, two of three goals I set to achieve by the end of July were to hold a yard sale {to help eliminate all the items from the major household purge} and to paint our office desk.

Sadly, neither of those were achieved by July's end. We had arranged and made plans to have the yard sale on the last Saturday in July. To my immense frustration, the weather forecast was threatening rain with multiple possible thunderstorms, so we decided to postpone the event. And then during the final days of July when I had planned to tackle the desk project and get it painted before I began my seasonal work, Makenna came down with some sort of virus which had her running a fever for nearly two days.

I vowed not to despair over my foiled plans.

So then, on the first Monday of August, I officially started working again. On Tuesday, it seemed Makenna could be coming down with yet another sickness. This time, it was much worse--she contracted croup. Our poor darling was coughing the most awful sound, and by Wednesday she started with a fever, too. Caring for her took up much of my free time.

And on top of this, I was finishing any last-minute preparations for our yard sale, because this past Saturday was our rescheduled yard sale day. By Friday, our house was a complete and utter disaster with the categorized piles of items sorted here and there, ready to be taken out and displayed in the early hours of Saturday.

I am happy to report that our garage sale was a success! Not only did we bypass the minimum amount I was wanting to make in order to feel that the whole effort was worth it, but we made just $1.50 short of my overall goal. What we earned was exactly enough to put together a new coffee bar in our dining room, which will give me a lot more usable counter space in our little kitchen. {I will be blogging the results soon when the coffee bar is all put together!} I can't even begin to tell you how wonderfully free I felt after eradicating all that stuff for the yard sale, whether it was purchased or later dropped off at the Salvation Army. It was as if a thousand pounds were lifted off of my shoulders, I tell you!

Then this past week, we had another big event. If you might recall, we live in the greater Metro Detroit area, and we had some massive rainstorms come through Monday evening that left a wake of devastating flooding. I'm not talking about flooding up to the rooftops or anything that severe, but rather several feet of water in many folks' basements, and most major roadways closed due to the flooding {which in places, flooded enough to almost submerge cars}. Apparently there were even a few elderly folks who drowned.

It is quite a sight to presently drive up and down our street and the surrounding neighborhoods. Every house has piled furniture, carpeting, and boxes upon boxes of personal items at the curb for the garbage service to haul away. I was blown away when I went on a walk with Makenna to see all the damage that was done. And that's when I realized exactly how lucky we are.

Most people had inches, if not feet, of flooding in their basements due to sewer backup. We, however, did not have that. We have a sump pump in our basement and for the first forty five minutes or so of the torrential rains, we didn't realize that our sump pump didn't trigger for some reason. Matt was able to trip it and the pump started working immediately and stayed working, thankfully. But we did have a carpeted area of about five feet by ten feet that had gotten well-soaked from water coming up through our sump pump hole. {Our basement is partially finished with dry wall and carpeting, and one area of our basement is completely finished, which we have made into a cozy little family room.}

We diligently worked at getting the water out, cleaning the carpet, and drying it as much as possible. But the damage had been done and there was no question that unless we wanted a super-stinky basement {that likely would have ended up moldy, too}, we'd have to pull out the wet carpet. The wetness had spread to a very large area, so about half of our basement carpet was taken out.

And then, by some miracle, we discovered that we have some kind of allowance in our homeowners insurance policy that would help cover damages. We don't have flood insurance so I don't know how this worked out exactly, but when they said they wanted to send us a check and waive our need to meet the deductible, I was beyond ecstatic. We haven't heard of anyone who has had any kind of insurance coverage to help with repair and replacement, which is such a shame given that most people had much worse damage than we did.

The carpet company came out today and we can re carpet our entire basement for $20 less than the amount of the check we're receiving from the insurance company. We are still in disbelief!!! Oh my goodness, what an incredible blessing we have received. We are praising the Lord because truly in this situation, it is only His hand that could have provided this gift for us.

Next week, this beauty will be in our basement:

A tremendous blessing in disguise from the water damage.

And now, here's to hoping things quiet down around here and we can settle into a little bit more normalcy!

Another New Family Member!

Remember how my gorgeous sister-in-law, Jennie, and my brother-in-law, JJ, were expecting seven weeks after Makenna's due date?

Well yesterday, they welcomed Cora Jean Perry into the world! At 6 lb 12 oz and 20 inches, she is tiny but oh-so-adorable!

JJ and Jennie kept the gender a surprise. I have to admit, I was hoping for a girl. Not that we wouldn't love a boy just as much, but since Makenna has
two cousins just barely older than her in my family, I thought it would be wonderful if her third cousin very close in age to her would be a girl! You know, a cousin she could bond with over all things girly. I am already envisioning them playing Barbies and dress up together, and just loving each other to death!

Welcome, Cora! We love you so very much already!

The OTHER Big News

There has been something else I have been dying to share with you for weeks now. I honestly thought I would haven been able to share this news a lot earlier, and the longer I've had to wait, the more antsy I've become. This news IS about my pregnancy, but it also isn't really.

I believe most of you know that I have a beautiful, wonderful, amazing, incredible older sister named Erin. We are two years and two days apart in age and we are best friends.

So now, as you might be guessing, the other pregnancy news is that Erin is ALSO pregnant!!!

BUT. Not only are we pregnant at the same time, we very nearly have the same due date. Our due dates are twelve, count them, TWELVE days apart!! I mean, you can't really get about any closer than that, huh?!? {I am due first, on February 15th, and Erin just after on February 27th}.

I will never, ever forget the night Erin called me to tell me she was pregnant as long as I live. Matt and I had known we were pregnant for over a month by then, but we hadn't shared the news with any of our families yet.

Erin called and said she wanted to text me a picture. She hung up and tried to send it several times, but I didn't receive it. She then told me she'd email it to me instead, and that I should call her when I opened it. I hung up, and I told Matt that I thought Erin was going to tell me she was pregnant. {For some unknown reason, I had been feeling for a few weeks that Erin might be pregnant}. I asked Matt if that were true, could I please share our news with her, because, well....come on! How could I NOT tell her in that moment!???!

I opened up my email, and indeed--it was a picture of several "positive" pregnancy tests! I called her immediately, and our conversation went like this:

Me: AHHH!! ERIN!!!! You're pregnant!!! Oh my gosh!!

Erin: I know!!

{lots of giggling intermixed in all of this}

Me: Oh Erin! This is so amazing!! You're pregnant!

Erin: It's so crazy!

Me: {giggling, then sighing quietly} Oh Erin.............me too.

Erin: {stopped giggling abruptly} WHAT?!!

Me: {giggling again at this point}

Erin: WAIT! What did you say?!?

Me: You heard me!

Erin: WHAT!?!?!? You're pregnant?!?!?!?!?!

After more shrieks and giggles, we of course then spent hours on the phone discussing things, but were beyond thrilled to figure out that besides being pregnant at the same time, we practically conceived simultaneously! We just couldn't believe it, or begin to imagine anything more wonderful. Our first pregnancies--together.

So all of this time, I've felt as if a part of my own pregnancy news has been that Erin is pregnant right along with me. I have just wanted to shout this news from the rooftops, but of course I needed to wait until Erin and Dan felt comfortable sharing the news with the online world. {Of course they have shared this news with others in-person a long time ago}

BUT WAIT. The news doesn't stop there....I have more wonderful news to share!!!

So, four years ago, Matt's younger brother, JJ, married the most wonderful, beautiful, incredible girl named Jennie. I have been so incredibly blessed to gain her as my sister and I love her more than words could ever say!

With JJ and Jennie, our joy has tripled because they are also expecting!!! Their first little one will arrive in early April, just seven weeks after our own baby girl. We are so thrilled for them, and it is just one more incredible joy for me, that Jennie and I also get to share being pregnant together!

Thank the Lord that thus far, all three of our pregnancies have been normal and healthy. It is so fun to get to share and compare symptoms, milestones, joys, fears, expectations, etc. with both of my sisters.

As great of a blessing from God as all our pregnancies are, Matt and I are so excited knowing that our baby girl is going to have a cousin VERY close in age on both sides of our families. So amazing, right?! Oh, and in case you were wondering, Erin and Dan are having a baby boy, and JJ and Jennie plan to wait to learn the gender until the big arrival.

So now that I have shared all this wonderfulness, I finally feel that the sharing of the pregnancy news is complete.

Gender Reveal

Our little, intimate gender reveal gathering was such a fun and memorable night! It meant so much to Matt and I that both sets of our parents made a considerable drive just to participate in our special moment.

To preface our little reveal: Matt and I were going to open a "present" in front of our parents. This present contained a gender-neutral stuffed monkey {the only gender-neutral small animal Target had!}. We brought the box, the monkey, and a pink and blue ribbon to our ultrasound appointment. We asked the ultrasound tech to leave the room, tie the correct colored ribbon around the monkey's neck, then throw the other ribbon away. She did so and put the monkey safely back into the box. {Once in the car after the appointment, I taped the box shut with packaging tape to eliminate temptation. Then I wrapped the present, again using packaging tape, as soon as we arrived home. Matt and I were so good and didn't sneak a peek!}

Here is the present just before the reveal:

And now.....

without further ado...

we discovered that our little baby is.....

A GIRL!!!

Ok be honest....how many of you scrolled down to this part before reading the beginning part of this blog post??!

Matt and I are beyond thrilled!!

While Matt didn't really have a "feeling" about the gender of our baby from the start, I most definitely did. I felt very strongly that it was a girl. Yet I didn't let my mind linger upon this at all; I was too afraid of dreaming about how fun it would be to have a girl and then end up feeling any tinge of disappointment if we discovered our baby was in fact a boy. It was helpful that at my last OB/GYN checkup, our baby's heart rate was a bit on the lower spectrum. I then had a dream a few days later that our baby was a boy. So by the time our gender reveal gathering happened, I really felt uncertain about our baby's gender.

It was so incredibly fun to have our parents there with us when we learned about our baby GIRL! I couldn't have imagined anything more special. I love that we all shared that moment together.

And now, it is SO FUN to know our baby's gender and be able to say "she" or "her." We are just loving this!

A Peek at Baby Perry

We had another ultrasound today! It was so exciting to see baby Perry looking like, well, a baby.

Here he or she is:

Check it out...baby Perry is super limber! That's the leg and foot stretched way up there next to the head. The ultrasound tech said baby is folded like a little pretzel!

And yes, the gender was discovered today...it's just Matt and I don't know it yet! We had the tech put a gender-specific item in a box, then we hurried home and wrapped it up in wrapping paper. We are waiting to open it in front of both sets of our parents on Sunday evening, so we'll have a very mini and very intimate little "gender reveal" party together! Matt and I were very good and resisted at peeking, but of course it is hard to be patient, especially since only wrapping paper and a box separate us from knowing the answer. I know we can do it! These next couple of days will be majorly busy, so that will help the time go by quickly until Sunday evening comes.

Of course, check back here to find out the gender! I probably won't post it until about a week later than our little reveal event, just until we can share baby's gender with some of our family and closest friends in person. Until then, thanks for your patience!

The Happy and the Sad

It's ironic how life can bring such happy and such sad things into one's life at the same time. The last several days have brought both of these things into Matt's and my life.

On Monday evening, Matt's grandma passed away from congestive heart failure. Her passing was quite sudden, although we were able to be with her one last time just before she went.

Grandma Peggy was a lovely and wonderful person; she will be dearly missed. However, we have much comfort in knowing that she is in Heaven with her Savior, full of joy and free of pain and sadness. We love you, Grandma!

The happiness that came into our lives arrived in the form of this beautiful little baby boy:

This is William Otis Taylor, born Friday, August 5th. My sister Erin and her husband Dan adopted Will and brought him home on Sunday!

This happened so suddenly. On Thursday, Erin and Dan found out they had been selected as the adoptive parents to a baby who would be born at any time. Early Friday morning, they got the call to come to the hospital to meet their baby boy!

Will is a perfect, beautiful little African American boy. He is as healthy as can be and such a good, sweet, and calm little baby. He's not fussy, except when he gets his diaper changed--he then puts up quite the fight. My goodness, he is certainly strong for his mere 7 lbs.!

Matt and I went to Indiana yesterday to meet our new nephew. He already loves his Uncle Matt and Aunt Deanne!

Before we arrived, I was plain and clear to my Mom and Erin and Dan that I fully intended to be selfish all day yesterday and get Will to myself! And I did! I fed him, burped him, helped as he fought hard against the diaper changes, and snuggled him in my arms for hours and hours. He is so delicious! And like most babies, he smells so amazingly good.

Uncle Matt and Will bonded.

I can think of nearly nothing as fun as shopping for babies! I had to restrain myself to not go too crazy with the gifts from Uncle Matt/Aunt Deanne...I must remember to spread out the spoiling!

I am so in love with this little boy. He has already brought so much love and sunshine into all our lives!

We love you, Grandma Peggy! Welcome to our family, Will!

Kinder Surprise Eggs

I have had a love affair with many different European chocolates, but by far, one of my favorites is the Kinder Surprise Egg.

This is a hollow, milk chocolate egg {very delicious chocolate, I might add} with a plastic yellow "yolk" in the center. The "yolk" contains a toy, often requiring assembly.

Unfortunately, Kinder Eggs have been banned in the US since 1997 because of a law stating no food item can be sold which contains a non-edible object. Even Canada sells them, but they will be seized if you try to bring them into the US.

I first encountered Kinder Eggs when the Steiner family brought them to the US prior to their banishment. Since then, I have maintained a collection of all the Kinder toys I have acquired over the years. Since I have traveled quite a bit to Europe, I now have a decent stock! I just adore Kinder Eggs and the amazing, and sometimes complex, little toys that come out of the tiny "yolk."

Of course, having lived in Hungary for eight months, I treated myself to quite a few Kinder eggs. I also introduced them to Matt when he came to visit! After consuming the eggs in Hungary, I brought back my newer Kinder Egg toys to add to my collection.

Below, I'd like to share some of my newer additions, as well as some of my favorites overall.

A new one--a mini puzzle!

Before

Finished

Another new one...

A sailboat that actually floats in the water! {I checked}

This new one is so cool...first, the skier bends down to touch the skis. Then
you insert him {folded down} into the left side of the lodge. As you insert
him, an inner piece of the lodge slides out to the right. Push this inner piece
back into the lodge with force, and it catapults the skier out at a great
speed and distance!

One of my favorites! Push the Eskimo along and the dogs move
back and forth.

Push down on the top of the magician and the woman raises up.

Just plain cute.

A very European-looking car.

Jumbo jet!

The ever-classic witch.

The Surprise at the End of Our Hike

Being surrounded by such natural beauty, Matt and I felt we really needed to take advantage of being in the Smoky Mountains and do a bit of hiking.

We both have hiked and camped in the Smoky Mountains as teenagers with our respective church youth groups {one of our many parallel life experiences before we met}. We didn't want anything quite that serious, but rather a moderate hike lasting a few hours, so we chose the hike to Grotto Falls.

It ended up being a 2.6 mile round trip hike with the first half being a continuous uphill hike back to the falls.

The sun was shimmering through the leaves, the birds were singing, and the air was freshened with the sweet scents of the forest. It was lovely.

And here is Grotto Falls. One reason we chose this hike was because visitors can walk behind the waterfall.

We thoroughly enjoyed our hike and jumped back in our car to begin descending the mountain's narrow, one-way road. Along the way down, visitors can stop and explore a few preserved homesteads.

We stopped to enjoy this little piece of history and then continued down the road in our car.

Suddenly, as we were rounding a corner, Matt shouted, "Look what's on the road!"

This black bear only trotted along the road for a moment and then went into the woods just off the road. We pulled up next to him and happily observed him from the safety of our car for several minutes as he was busy doing bear-things, like looking up a tree, licking his paws, and scratching behind his ear.

We were SO grateful not to have met this guy on the hiking trail!

After we drove off from the bear, we came upon another homestead. We noticed a young mother and father and their four very small children sitting outside of it and eating lunch.

Seeing as how they were in such close proximity to a black bear, we felt obligated to stop and let them know.

However, after sharing the news, the couple just shrugged it off.

"Oh yeah," they said. "Someone else told us they saw a black bear a little bit ago, too."

Maybe they were locals who knew enough to know if they were really in danger or not. All we knew is that we had read a sign at the beginning of our hiking trail warning that bears in the mountains have become accustomed to humans and now equate humans to food. Yikes.

***

Our time in Tennessee was the perfect little getaway for me and Matt. We had the perfect mix of delicious leisure time in our cozy cabin and time spent enjoying the mountains and little towns.

We treated ourselves to an afternoon couples massage and spa bath, played mini golf, visited the Titanic Museum {really excellent}, ate lots of yummy food {the corn fritters with maple pecan butter were my favorite}, and of course, drank lots and lots of sweet tea.

It was the perfect little vacation for me and Matt to celebrate our reunion and recharge for our return to Michigan where, finally, our lives shall return to normal.
